Second step of making Moroccan Tiles

In the previous article we spoke about how Artzellige choose and filter the clay which is the main source of making Moroccan tiles, we stopped at the part where the craftsmen put the soaked clay under the sun for a period between two weeks to 1 month in order to dry.

Once the clay dried, we refer to it as a tile. We then place these tiles into natural wood fired kilns, where the temperature reaches above 200 degrees. At Artzellige, we always use traditional Moroccan kilns, which circulate heat irregularly around the tiles, resulting in different tones when they dry perfectly, making each tile unique.

There are three specific kind of craftsman that are used at this point to achieve the best zellige tiles.

The Three Steps of Crafting Perfect Moroccan Tiles

The first one take the dried zellige and flat it by hand using a special tool that allows to eliminate gaze bubbles. It gives it the perfect shape flat and rigid.

Secondly, a second craftsman carefully cuts the flat tiles into the desired shape using a medieval tool called "Menkash,". It gives each tile its perfect shape.

The third part happens next by the master craftsman, who specializes in precise cutting, completes the last step. This process produces various types of tiles. It used to create the beautiful zellige that you know and love in your kitchen or bathroom.

Artzellige showcases these steps to demonstrate that we provide the best quality Moroccan tiles in Morocco.
